ART1307 presents a film by Eric Minh Swenson: “NED EVANS: WATER BOUND“
NED EVANS: RESIN TEARS, PUDDLES AND POOLS
Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Music by Secret Circuit
Ned Evans has been making bas relief three-dimensional forms intermittently since 1985, and his resin tears, puddles, and pools are borne from a lifelong relationship to surfboards, both in and out of the water. In part, these luminescent resin shapes were conceived from Malibu lagoon’s current debacle, worsened by human ignorance. What began as a single tear is now a pool, a puddle, a fish, a wind-torn raindrop, an ever-shifting shape.
Ned Evans Speaking About His Work
UC Irvine was a hotbed of creativity and experimentation in the 1960s and early ’70s, a hub of innovation where exceptional teachers such as Tony DeLap, Robert Irwin, and Vija Celmins taught talented students like Alexis Smith, Chris Burden, and Nancy Buchanan. All but forgotten in the intervening years, this exceptional time and place is now recovered at Laguna Art Museum in Best Kept Secret.

Ned Evan’s exhibitions push and pull the limitations of color-infused fractures, dissection, and reassemblage, and this most recent collection of paintings celebrates and elucidates the convergence of torqued aerial perspectives and seductive angles, as well brilliant and intoxicating color. In some paintings, there is a palpable examination of concave colliding with convex, the sliding of one landscape into another, creating a deliciously askance perception, while in others there is an unpredictable, almost photographic quality between the interplay of dark and light. Within each of these paintings, there are moments of intimacy to be discovered, spaces redolent of recognition and familiarity, in situ with controlled chaos.
A master of texture and mediums, Evans effortlessly integrates fabric, acrylic paints, and texture additives to create complex interplays of varying surface structure. By shifting from gloss, satin, and flat varnishes, he adds to this richness with his seductive use of color. Evans has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and is included in many important public and private collections.
Born in Burbank, California in 1950, with an MFA from UC Irvine in 1974, Ned Evans has lived in Venice, California since the early 1970s. Working primarily in painting in acrylic and mixed media on canvas, he has also spent years exploring photography, collage, and mixed media sculptural reliefs. He has shown throughout the United States and Europe. While his work is unquestionably influenced by the Southern California landscape, ultimately and inevitably his reconstructing and building edifices and foundations, on top of which exist the nuances of illusion and light.
