LATITUDE 34 – 40: first act

A meeting, a correlation that may seem hazardous, but that is actually very real. Two cities connected by History, not by a history they share but by their respective individual history, past and present.
Naples: an incredible succession of dominations has turned the city, since the fall of the Roman empire, into a place where everything, and more, can happen.
Los Angeles was founded as: ”El Pueblo de la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles sobre la Porciuncula de Asís ” on the basis of a Mexican and Indian plan. Native Americans under the domination of Latin Americans from Mexico: an invasion which still continues, in an infinite history of migration. And a white community, result of a colonization within the colonization of the New Continent.
It is this at the base of the exchange of the Italian artists to Los Angeles and the American artists to Naples. The idea of enabling two worlds, two cultures, to ways of life to meet each other and then to see the effect and to understand whether, after all, there are any real differences.
«Latitude 34/40» is a confrontation between seven Italian and five American artists, in a fascinating exhibition which exposes the public to emotional surges and pauses of reflection, leaps of imagination and sudden recalls to reality. Figurative, informal, conceptual and minimal artists share what John Dewey called “the common substance of the arts”, or in other words the sensibility for one’s own means of expression, in which the artists emphatically projects his or her feelings or emotions.
